Any Ideas for Brain Fog in Pregnancy?

It has been about three weeks since I've posted here! I think that's probably the longest I've gone without posting since starting the blog. So what's going on?

Brain fog, that's what.

I thought I had gotten rid of brain fog for good. I used to have it quite regularly, but have been free of it for the last two years or so, ever since I began to take an Omega 3 supplement along with my vitamins.

Since brain fog isn't something I've been medically diagnosed with, I'll just tell you what I mean by it. For me, it means that my mind doesn't seem capable of thinking beyond the moment. Days become chaotic, though I still manage to make schooling happen because it's in a written routine. I can't even contemplate picking up a book and reading anything meaningful, much less writing. I don't have it every day, maybe just two or three days a week. Still, that's usually enough to throw things off for the entire week.

I have continued to take my vitamin and Omega 3 supplements, but I am thinking that perhaps my pregnancy is depleting my body of something essential. What that could be, I have no idea. I picked up some kale with my groceries this week for some green smoothies. Green smoothies have helped me get over loss of energy in my second trimester before. I hope the nutrient boost will help correct whatever it is I'm not getting enough of.

Do you have any ideas for me? I know this is way outside what I normally write about, but I hope that somewhere out there is someone who has been through this and knows just what I need. :)

I add a spoonful of spirulina to my smoothies. I'm not sure it would cure brain fog, but it is full of vitamins and minerals and is considered a superfood.

I just checked its safety in pregnancy and online information is mixed. It seems clear that the vitamins and minerals are great, but there's some concern that since it's from the sea, there could be mercury? Bottom line, it hasn't been tested. I'll have to have a look around and see if there are certain brands that are up to certain standards when it comes to that. I do take omega 3's, after all (fish oil) and trust that since it says on the bottle that it's tested for toxins, it's safe.
I don't have any advice--nothing you probably haven't already heard anyway. :) I *still* feel like I have brain fog some days. And my little guy will be ONE next week! HA! I read somewhere though, that breastfeeding also causes it, so I'm going with that. ;)

This too shall pass! I hope changing your diet helps. :)

Thanks Catie. In fact, I AM still nursing as well... maybe the pregnancy and nursing at once is just too much. On the other hand, I did it last pregnancy, too, and the nursing toddler really comes in handy in those early days of nursing a newborn (supply is already somewhat established, oversupply is easily taken care of...). Have you tried taking Omega 3's? I had brain fog off and on from the time my first child was born until pregnant with my third. I started taking Omega 3's, and it went away for two whole years ...until now, in fact. I still think they must have had some benefit, even if they're not quite cutting it right now.
Wow! Kudos for nursing while preggers! Seriously. You are a stronger woman than I. :) I can barely get through pregnancy. The last one wasn't *so* bad, but it's never great.

I actually have started taking Omega 3's in the last year. I also take a GREAT vitamin called VIBE, have you heard of it? It helps so much.

I'll pray that you start to feel better! I know how frustrating it can be--to not be able to articulate your thoughts very well.
I don't have any suggestions, but wanted to say congratulations!!!
Based on what the lady at the healthfood store told me (she even looked it up while I was there), spirulina is safe for while pregnant/breastfeeding. I started taking a greens supplement that contains it. It's supposed to be better than a multivitamin because it's all from foods, no manufactured vitamins. Anyways, it's easiest to take in a smoothie or something like that. :)
